So in honour of one of my favorite holidays- Halloween and in light of the fact that I'm planning a 'worms and dirt' birthday dessert for my son this weekend- I've had bugs on the brain. As a result I have collected a variety of information on the nutritional value of different insects, insect recipes and a number of sources wherein you can buy insects-a yummy addition to your diet (if you don't feel like digging in the dirt and getting your hands dirty). I'll state this loud and clear- I'm one of those that doesn't think that they could do it- eat a bug. Maybe under extreme survival circumstances but even then I'd have to work up some good old fashioned courage. Bugs are not by friends. That being said, my preference would be to consume them in powder form so that they aren't watching me as I'm tossing them back. Staring up into my eyes as I pop them into my mouth, listening to each sickening crunch as I break them to bits with my teeth. Ick! So, we've established that bugs aren't on the menu at my house. How many of you have gone for it? What kinds of insects have you eaten? How would you describe the taste? What's your favorite way to eat the little suckers?! Bugs have long been consumed by people from around the world http://travel.usnews.com/features/Countries_That_Eat_Bugs/ and for good reason too. Bugs have awesome potential when it comes to meeting nutritional needs.
