So in honour of one of my favorite holidays- Halloween and in light of the fact that I'm planning a 'worms and dirt' birthday dessert for my son this weekend- I've had bugs on the brain. As a result I have collected a variety of information on the nutritional value of different insects, insect recipes and a number of sources wherein you can buy insects-a yummy addition to your diet (if you don't feel like digging in the dirt and getting your hands dirty). I'll state this loud and clear- I'm one of those that doesn't think that they could do it- eat a bug. Maybe under extreme survival circumstances but even then I'd have to work up some good old fashioned courage. Bugs are not by friends. That being said, my preference would be to consume them in powder form so that they aren't watching me as I'm tossing them back. Staring up into my eyes as I pop them into my mouth, listening to each sickening crunch as I break them to bits with my teeth. Ick! So, we've established that bugs aren't on the menu at my house. How many of you have gone for it? What kinds of insects have you eaten? How would you describe the taste? What's your favorite way to eat the little suckers?! Bugs have long been consumed by people from around the world http://travel.usnews.com/features/Countries_That_Eat_Bugs/ and for good reason too. Bugs have awesome potential when it comes to meeting nutritional needs. Being as I live in a place where it's very cold in the winter time, I have been thinking about this on and off all year, and now that it's winter I'm thinking about it again. Freezing to death in your own home? Learn to live in just one room My kid looked out the window just the other day and proclaimed excitedly "Wow, it looks just like Frozen out there!" Yes, Disney's Frozen. It's one thing for it to look and feel "frozen" on the outside but I'd rather not be stuck freezing to death in the interior of our home. Power's Out, it's freaking cold outside and as it nears night time the temperature drops further. What are your plans? As I've stated previously, I've thought about this subject on and off all year. I've thought about hunkering down in one small room and trying to keep my family warm in there. Blankets, sleeping bags, kerosene heater, ways to cook food off grid, food preps, hygiene preps, sewing curtains for windows to keep the cold out, etc. Remember to prep the vehicles for winter as well. Make sure you have an emergency kit ready for use just in case. Layer up, stay warm and be ready! Other Links: It's the little things that count. You don't need to bankrupt yourselves trying to build up your supply of food...(in fact, you should do what you can to avoid piling on the debt...), there are ways to build up your food supply and your other preps without becoming completely broke. Here is a list I found that can help you build up a 1 year supply of food for the low low price of just $5 per week. Happy shopping! This will be a good reminder to some and an eye opener for others. Here is a list of things that you may not have considered in regards to your preps and the aftermath of an unexpected event. 10 Disturbing SHTF Threats That Most Preppers Haven't Prepared For. I have to begin by saying that sitting down to plan out a 72 hour kit is a bit of a daunting task. It's hard to know exactly where to begin. My husband and I have begun to put these together for our family. We started with food just as a starting point. So far we have meals loaded up for one day for each member of the family. We included items such as:
We were aiming for food items that don't expire quickly so that we don't have to swap out our food on a frequent basis, and items that wouldn't burst open in the kit and ruin everything in them. We were also looking for food options that would give everyone as rounded of a meal as possible (and get everyone the vitamins, protein, etc) for while having to live out of these bags. We were trying to bear in mind the weight of the bags as well, trying to limit them as best we could, especially with the kids in mind. I found that it helps to sit down with a pen and paper and write down everything you need for each meal...day one: breakfast, day one: lunch, day one: dinner, day two:... Then go out a purchase. We put all of our food into piles. This is mom's, dad's and each kid. That way no one is missed. We also put all of the food for each family meal into a plastic, resealable bag. Each day gets a new bag. Then the food was directly deposited into each family member's backpack. It took us a while to get to this stage and we still have lots to go. We tend to procrastinate, which will get us into trouble in the end. I hope you have better luck and motivation! Here are some links for inspiration:
If anyone has any great links, stories or hints based on 72 hour kits to share, please do. That would be great!
