This month: Home Storage Goals:
Other Goals:
I've decided to include some month-to-month goals on the blog that people can use either as inspiration or ways to get going if they aren't sure where to start with prepping. This month: Home Storage Goals:
Other Goals:
For those of you who are just beginning to prep and need a plan to help get you started or for preppers of every level (really) who are looking for a plan to help you get more organized perhaps you might consider a prepping calendar. There are a tonne available out there on the net or feel free to make one for yourselves that you can customize to fit your own needs. Here are some examples of what I am talking about:
Hopefully this will serve as a means to motivate you in your prepping quest, some ideas to get you going. Perhaps you're looking for something to do this summer:
A- Animals- Learn what you can do to fend off attack or how to take care of animals ie: goats, chickens, other livestock. Archery- Find your way to an archery lane to learn this valuable skill or to practice. B- Biking- Pull out your bike, dust it off, fill the tires and go! Find some trails, get some exercise. Books- Obtain some good reference material as part of your preps. We won't always be able to rely on Google for all of our living needs. Budget- Create a good budget and stick to it. Bug Out Bags- If you don't have one, obtain one. If you do make sure you go through it to ensure the supplies are not outdated and will carry you through a disaster. C- Camping- Good to get out at least once a year to test your skills. Backyard camping may be a fun way to introduce your young kids to this activity. Canning- Excellent skill to help you add to your food storage. Here's a link to some centers that allow you to use their facilities to build up your storage. Compost- Great for gardening. Container Gardening- A little less demanding than a full scale garden for those with limited time and resources. D- Debt- Do what you can to eliminate some debt now, could really help you out down the road. Donate- Some of your old clothes and items to those less fortunate. Great way to help others out while also de-cluttering your own space. Donating blood is also a great thing to do to help others out in times of emergency. Drills- Natural Disaster, Bug out, Bug in, Home invasion, etc. Practice now in times of non stress so you will know how you will fair in stressful circumstances. E- Education- Educate yourself. Read articles, take classes, talk to others. Great way to obtain the info you'll need to help you in your prepping. Ever heard of a MOOC...me either until recently (Massive Online Only Courses....FREE!). Electronic Devices- Great tools but tend to get in the way of life...put them down, spend your time on prepping instead! Emergency Plan- Have one. Here is a Canadian Government resource to get you started. What resources do you have available in your area? F- Family time- Schedule some time to do some fun activities with your family. Great to bond and build relationships. Remember, when doomsday strikes you'll likely be stuck in a tight quarters-bunker with these people. Learn to like each other now. :) Farm- If you are a city or town dweller maybe you would like to visit a farm and see how its done or take your kids as an educational experience. You could also visit a farmer's market if you have never done so. Fishing- If you know how- stock up your freezer or teach someone else how to do it. If you don't know how, maybe you would want to learn. In our area we have a free fishing weekend where, for a few days you can fish without a license as a means to promote the activity. Fishing regulations still apply. Perhaps you have something similar in your area. Firearms Training- It's important to learn firearms safety and to get comfortable with a firearm under the right circumstances. Keep an eye out for courses offered in your area. Fire- Practice your fire starting skills and learn to start a fire using a variety of methods. I'm interested in trying the Swedish Method, anyone done this that can share their experience? Teach your kids fire safety and let them give it a try. G- Garage sale- Attend one- look for prep items. Hold one to earn some cash or clear up clutter (for more prepwork!). Gardening- start a small vegetable garden. Geocaching- Give it a try. It will get you outdoors, maybe a fun family activity. Government- Do some research- find out what resources (info/rebates/etc.) your area's government may offer during emergency situations or for items like solar panels for your home, etc. H- Hiking- Go for a hike, explore, have fun! If you hike regularly: mix it up, find some new trails. Home-made- Food recipes, cleaning supplies, etc. Try making something. Home storage- Look to increase it, organize it, learn more about it. Horseback riding- Go on a trail ride, gain some experience on horseback. I- Inventory- Do some inventory of your prep supplies, what have you got, what could you improve on? Invest- In some additional supplies- even just a couple of food cans here or there in that's all you can manage. J- Jogging- J was a difficult letter, if anyone has anything better then by all means...share! K- Knife throwing- It's fun once you start getting the hang of it. Knot tying- A nice skill to have. L- Legal Papers- No time like the present to get some of your legal business in order. Update your will, etc. M- Maintenance- Vehicle, Home, etc. Martial Arts- Time to join up and learn to defend yourself. Metal Detecting- You never know what you might find. Tip- look in areas where there has been lots of foot traffic ie: beaches, playgrounds. N- News- Aim to become more aware and update on current events. Networking- Reach out to others, you never know when you might need some help. O- Organize- Obtain some shelving units or totes, etc. organize your preps so they are easy to access in the event of an emergency. This doesn't always mean having to spend money...my husband built some shelving units for organization out of an old desk we picked up for free. P- Paper Bricks- Make some to have as another option for getting a fire going. Prep Haven Challenge- Care to try out our 1 week challenge? See disaster challenges in the menu bar. Q- Quarantine- Have a plan ready in case you need to set one up, practice so you know how to do it correctly. R- Recipes- Try out one new recipe a week. Recycling- If you don't currently, perhaps you might want to give it a try. Turn an old something into a new something. Reflector Oven- For camping, fire pit cooking, etc. Build one or obtain one. If you have built one we'd love to hear about your experiences with it (my husband and I would love to build one for ourselves). S- SAS guide- Obtain a copy and learn some of the survival skills inside. Safety Discussions- Have some with your children. Teach them their parent/guardians full names, their address and phone numbers. Talk to them about what to do in a number of scenarios: Stranger approach, natural disasters, etc. Sewing- Perhaps take some sewing lessons or pull yours out and practice with it. Take on a new project. Solar Food Dehydrator- Build one or obtain one and start preparing dehydrated food for your storage. Swimming Lessons- If you or your children do not know how to swim now is the time to learn how. T- Trapping- Learn about building animal traps for food. U- Unnecessary Clutter- Remove from your yard and home. V- Vehicle Prep- 72 hour/ Roadside Emergency kit. Proper vehicle maintenance. Make sure your tank is always at least half full---Gas stations tend to get overcrowded when people are in a hurry to get out (during emergency situations). Volunteer- Yourself or your kids for clean up work, working with others, etc. W- Walking- for exercise/ familiarizing yourself with your surroundings. Water- Purification, Conserving during an emergency, Proper storing, etc. X- X-plore- Your community and surrounding areas, know what's around you. Visit a store you've never been to, drive some back roads. (and yes I cheated with the whole X-plore thing-shhh!) Y- YMCA- Programming for you or your kids. Z- (Z is difficult, if you have anything then share your Brilliance with me because I came up with nothing). These are just ideas, if you want try them out, if not then ignore this list. If you have suggestions of your own-fantastic share them with the rest of the class! |
