QuikClot is a fast acting blood clotting agent that can be used during emergency situations to quickly stem bleeding from a wound. I came across a review today that I thought was interesting. It argues against the use of quikclot. I thought it was a good read: The Case Against QuikClot First Aid skills are a valuable skill to have, add them to your list of preps to make and you'll be ready when a situation arises. Found this neat website that shows you step by step how to tie knots. They have a large variety of knots for use in household, surgery, outdoors, etc. Check it out: Animated Knots This just randomly crossed my mind and I decided to look into it a little further. Not to mention, its one of those things that if you know how to do it now, it might come in handy later... So, how does one go about waterproofing their shoes? For starters, I discovered that there are products that can be purchased to achieve this:
For ideas on how to DIY:
Other Ideas:
Cryptosporidium infection (mayo clinic)
-Anti-motility agents. These medications slow down the movements of your intestines and increase fluid absorption to relieve diarrhea and restore normal stools. Anti-motility drugs: loperamide and its derivatives (Imodium A-D, others). Talk with your doctor before taking any of these medications. -Fluid replacement. Oral or intravenous replacement of fluids and electrolytes — minerals, such as sodium, potassium and calcium, that maintain the balance of fluids in your body — lost to diarrhea. -Antiretroviral therapies. If you have HIV/AIDS, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) can reduce the viral load in your body, boosting immune response. Restoring your immune system to a certain level may completely resolve symptoms of cryptosporidiosis.
Giardia Infection (mayo clinic)
-Tinidazole (Tindamax) Tinidazole works as well as metronidazole and has many of the same side effects, but it can be given in a single dose. -Nitazoxanide (Alinia) Because it comes in a liquid form, nitazoxanide may be easier for children to swallow. Side effects may include nausea, flatulence, yellow eyes and brightly colored yellow urine. **no consistently recommended meds for giardiasis in pregnancy due to potential for adverse drug effects to the baby

I came across a question that I didn't know the answer to and decided to look it up and share with the class. Question: Why do many food storage programs recommend eating legumes and rice together? Answer(s):
-When protein is consumed the body breaks it down into amino acids -complete proteins: contains all of the essential amino acids ie: fish, meat, poultry, dairy -incomplete proteins: don't ie: grains, legumes, corn, seeds, nuts and veggies -even if they contain all 9 amino acids, they need to be eaten in equal proportions or else they are still considered to be incomplete -BY COMBINING 2+ incomplete proteins you should be getting the essential amino acids that your body needs to work properly SO, Rice and legumes (incomplete proteins) combined should help to give you the essential amino acids you need and that is why they recommend combining the two. Other: I personally don't have this problem but came across this yesterday and thought others would be interested. Free Epipens Note that in the comments section of this article is the following: "Hi there. I am a nationally certified pharmacy tech. I just wanted to mention that this card does NOT guarantee free copays on epilpens. the fine print states that it covers a maximum of $100 per fill. I have seen people still pay $20- $50 copays using this card. but, it does help a lot." and... "Just a note. If you are on a High Deductable plan this will give you a discount. It wont be free, but it saved me about $300 on 2 double packs. ( still payed $600… but hey it was something)." This might be just for the States. Anyway, if anyone has more information that would be nice. As I stated, I don't require the use of these nor do any of my family members but thought for those who do that you might find this to be of interest. |
