So supper time rolled around the other day and my husband and I decided to try
out an MRE that we had just bought-we split it. We had never tasted or bought
one before.
Here's our story:
Vegetarian Chili with beans- the package included:
- 1 package of instant coffee (which we didn't consume as we don't drink coffee)
- 1 spoon, napkin, seasoning (salt, pepper, sugar, cream) and hand wipe
- 1 package of trail mix- ingredients: peanuts, raisins, walnuts, sunflower seeds, salt
- 1 package of sugar cookies (4 in the package)- they were lemon flavoured
- 1 package of pink lemonade, mix with 12 oz. water, vitamin c added
- 2 crackers (fairly large)
- 1 package of liquid chilli-ingredients: water, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, textured vegetable protein, modified food starch, natural flavour, salt, dehydrated onion, sugar, and soy
Thoughts:
- People who found out we bought an MRE (non-preppers) thought it sounded disgusting
- We had no clue what we were getting into, how it would taste, etc.
- It was surprisingly good!
- The trail mix wasn't overly salty...I've had some in the past that I couldn't stand because of too much salt.
- This meal was very high in protein- great for a survival scenario
- The chilli could've bean eaten hot or cold...we tried it both ways...obviously it tasted better warm but that's not the point
- Would have been sufficient for one person but during hard times could have been split
- We weren't expecting a liquid chilli to be honest, figured it would be something that needed re-hydrating
- Was a little annoyed that the packaging didn't include what was going to be in it, we were surprised that all of the above was included--had to open the package to find out what all was inside (poor information design, in my opinion).
- Would've liked to see a little lower price tag, this one was $10, though once we found out how much was in it I think it's probably fair and that I'm kind of stingy.
- Would buy another one.
