Got thinking this morning a little bit about self defence and martial arts...one prep which I feel is important for everyone-young and old, male and female. I plan to teach my own children to defend themselves.
There are a few obstacles that get in the way of people seeking out self defence training. One of which is the lack of self confidence, poor physical condition, not knowing how to choose a style of training suited to you, lack of motivation, feeling that you aren't or won't be good enough.
Martial arts training provides you with the confidence to fight back in a desperate situation and helps people to get into better shape. Both are things that would come in handy during a disaster/doomsday scenario.
I'm not sure how many people are aware of this but thought I would mention that there are lots of instructors out there who are more than happy to let you come into their studio and watch their class. Better yet, there are lots of instructors willing to let you try out a free class to see if you like it and perhaps if it is a good fit for you. The man that I trained under, when he noticed new comers, would invite them to come try it out then and there.
I know there are lots of people, women in particular, that are probably uncomfortable with the idea of joining a martial arts class. I wish to assure you that you have nothing to fear. As a martial artist myself I know that when new people came in we (myself and other members) would really try to make sure that you had a good time and would take it slow and easy on you. No one is great at anything the first time, hence the phrase "practice makes perfect." (I've had training sessions as well where at least half the class was composed of females---so ladies if you are worried about being really outnumbered, there are lots of other girls and women enjoying the benefits of martial arts training).
I have trained with all ages from young to old. The oldest person I have personally trained with was in her sixties but I've heard of people older than that joining up. Everyone can do it as long as they make the effort. Go at your own pace and have fun!
Need some motivation: Join with your kids. Make it a family activity, lots of families have and its a great way to bond together and have fun.
I encourage you to seek out training and see for yourself whether or not you like it. Even if you just stick with something long enough to learn basic self defence techniques...some training is better than no training.
To other martial artists out there... anything else you would like to add?
In the meantime, happy prepping!
